In 1998, vocalist Alex Perez changed the future with a simple $20
ad seeking other vocalists in a local Miami newspaper. Former
Menudo singer, Ashley Ruiz, responded to that ad; they met the same
night and sang together for hours. And thus, the “Inner Voice”
experience - which would become “HERE II HERE” in 2004 - was
born.
Alex, born in Lansing, Michigan to Cuban parents, only discovered
his vocal talent at the relatively late age of 19. Alex grew up
inspired by his father, who left Cuba a successful,
multiple-business owner only to arrive in the USA with nothing.
Shortly after arriving here, he again started his own business,
showing Alex, that obstacles are nothing in the face of
perseverance and a little ingenuity. “He accomplished most of what
he set himself out to do,” Alex says, “despite the obstacles he had
to overcome. We were very close and very similar. He died 10 years
ago, before I began my music career. He used to say that I was
going to do something big in life without even knowing what or how.
This has motivated me to get through whatever challenges come my
way.”
And so Alex has doggedly pursued his dream of singing
professionally, despite the absence of formal training and musical
experience. Often supported by his selfless wife, Alex has been a
copier repairman and a handy-man, as well as a stay-at-home dad
with his 3 beautiful little girls, in order to make his dream
reality.
Alex’s silky Brian McKnight-inspired, R&B styled vocal talent
now creates the smooth tenor and soaring soprano harmonies that
help HERE II HERE’s music fly. And his relentless sense-of-humor
both on stage and in person helps ground HIIH’s message in simple
playfulness, which reveals itself in his personal motto: “Live life
to the fullest. Here and Now!” Alex’s dream of singing
professionally is now continuously realizing itself through HERE II
HERE … a musical and often mystical adventure, born of a simple $20
newspaper ad some 8 years ago.
